IN VITRO FERTILISATION IVF
IVF is the most effective form of ART (Assisted Reproductive Technology) and involves a series of steps to treat infertility. In IVF, the egg is combined with the sperm outside the woman’s body preferably in a laboratory. To put it in simple words, it involves extraction of the eggs from the ovary, then fertilizing it with the sperm of the male partner in the laboratory resulting in the formation of embryos. Of these embryos the best ones are transferred back to the female partner’s body wherein it continues to grow for the remaining 9 months of pregnancy. Louise Brown was the first test tube baby born through IVF in 1978 in England. Nearly 5 million babies are born through IVF all over the world.
It is a time consuming, expensive and invasive procedure and is often employed when all the other methods of treatment have failed. IVF uses the couple’s own eggs and sperm but donor eggs and sperm may also be used if required with prior consent from the couple.
IVF ICSI
ICSI or Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a form of IVF treatment and is used in couples with male factor infertility. It involves injecting a sperm directly into the egg for fertilization. The process is similar to that of IVF but differs in the way the egg is fertilized. In IVF, the sperm fertilizes the egg on its own in the laboratory. But in case of men with low, abnormal or no sperm count or ejaculation problems, the sperm is unable to fertilize the egg normally. As such it needs to be injected into the egg to fertilize it. In such cases ICSI is the only option.
Ideal Candidate for ICSI
In many cases of IVF, the sperm is unable to get to the egg or even if it does get to the egg it is not able to fertilize it for some reason. In ICSI the sperm does not have to travel to the egg nor does it have to penetrate it to fertilize it. Thus is it an effective method of treatment for men who have the following conditions.
*Very low sperm count
Poor morphology or motility of sperm
Prior history of vasectomy or injury such that sperm can’t be ejaculated. In such cases the sperm is collected from the testicles or epididymis
Ejaculation or erection problems due to spinal cord injuries or diabetes etc
Surrogacy Centre Bangalore
Surrogacy is the term used to describe the arrangement in which a woman carries the baby for a full term for another couple. This is an appropriate option for couples who cannot carry a child naturally due to certain medical conditions. This provides infertile couples a chance to become parents without actually carrying the child. In this process another woman’s womb is used for implantation and carrying of the embryo as well as delivering the baby for the intended parents. The woman who carries the child for the intended parents is known as the surrogate.
CHOOSING A SURROGACY ARRANGEMENT
Gestational Surrogacy – the process involves using the eggs from the intended mother or anonymous donor and the sperm of the intended father or anonymous donor. The fertilization is done using IVF/ICSI methods. The fertilized egg is implanted into the surrogate mother’s body who carries the child for the full term. The child is not genetically related to the surrogate in this case. This is the preferred method as it avoids a lot of legal issues in future since there is no biological relation between the child and the surrogate as in case of traditional surrogacy.

Surrogacy is an appropriate option where the female partner is diagnosed with medical conditions that make it impossible or life threatening for her to carry the child for a full term. Let us have a look at some of these medical conditions.

- Malformations in the uterus
- Inexplicable recurrent pregnancy loss
- Repeated IVF implantation failures

FINDING A SURROGATE
Once your fertility specialist has recommended surrogacy, they may be able to help you with the process of finding a surrogate or you can get it done yourself. You can choose a family member or friend to be a surrogate. On the other hand we can provide you with a list of surrogates to choose from. All our surrogates are healthy individuals (physically and mentally) who undergo a rigorous screening procedure. They are individuals who have a history of carrying at least one child to full term free of any complications.
